The Community Consolidated School District 21 Board of Education during its January meeting unanimously approved a construction bid package for summer projects at seven schools.

All of the district’s 13 schools will have some form of construction underway this summer, but bids for those remaining projects will be voted upon at a later date.

The recommendation approved by the board includes the following major projects as well as additional work:

  • The final library and media center renovations at Holmes Middle School and Longfellow, Poe and Whitman Elementary Schools
  • New science, technology, engineering and math spaces for Longfellow, Poe and Whitman
  • Poe will receive the final HVAC work to upgrade its heating and air conditioning system
  • Student restroom renovations will be completed at Hawthorne Early Childhood Center, Tarkington Elementary School and Longfellow
  • New LED lighting for Holmes, Longfellow, Poe and Whitman
  • New energy-efficient boilers for Riley Elementary School and Whitman
  • New playgrounds at Poe and Frost and Kilmer Elementary Schools

In determining the scope of work to be completed, the district reviewed the remaining components of the 2018 referendum that was approved by the community, the needs of the students and staff at the buildings scheduled for work, and what funding sources were available to maximize the work that could be completed during summer 2024.

The total construction costs are $14,717,345, and the duration of the project is approximately three months.
