A free, healthy breakfast and lunch will be served throughout the summer for any child 18 years of age and younger thanks to a waiver granted by the USDA to allow meals to be served when school is out of session. School District 21 served nearly 300,000 meals last summer.

Jewel-Osco Foundation Nourishing Neighbors is supporting School District 21’s mission to ensure children have access to meals throughout the summer by awarding CCSD21 a $6,700 grant. Funding has been used to purchase coolers and ice sheets, which allows District 21 to serve food in locations throughout the community. Additional grant funds will be used to promote the program.

“Providing free meals throughout the summer meets a critical need in our community so all children have access to nutritious, filling food,” said Melissa Morgese, Director of Business Services for School District 21. “We appreciate the waivers granted by the USDA and the additional support from Jewel-Osco and the Nourishing Neighbors Foundation so we can continue to serve our community.”

“We’re honored to partner with School District 21 to help support their efforts in the fight against
hunger,” said Mike Withers, President of Jewel-Osco.

Meals will be served on weekdays from Monday, June 1, to Friday, August 6, between 9:30 – 11:30 AM. Meals will not be served on July 5, 9, 16, 23, or 30. Distribution locations are:
